This weekend I went camping at Wilsons Promontory. I was a bit hesitant to go at first since it's cold still but there was a chance of seeing wild wombats so I was sold on the trip (and I definitely was not disappointed).
A note on wombats: They're incredibly dense. Wombats weight from 15-35kg (about 30-75 pounds) and they're short stubby little animals. They also have butts of steel. Not really, but their butts are very hard and they use them as a shield. Even though they're wild, I personally dont think they're dangerous. Probably because they're so cute to me.
Friday night we got there around 11pm so we had to set up our tents in the dark which was definitely a challenge and not something I would recommend. Thankfully it was warm though and there were so many stars out. I even saw some shooting stars! It was amazing and something everyone should get to see. I tried to get a picture but it doesnt even come close to looking the same. Funny story though, we were told to leave all food in the car because wombats will try to eat your food. They even rip holes in your tent to try and get in. And what does Chris do? Of course he brings all his food over and a wombat comes and starts dragging his backpack away. Wombats cant run very fast though since they're so fat and their legs are so short haha. So Chris and the wombat start playing tug of war while Yolanda and I are laughing hysterically.
Saturday morning I woke up to the birds that were very loud and weird sounding. Some sound like they're laughing at you and others sound like people. But anyway, we went for a hike in the morning (which very beautiful) and then in the afternoon we just hung around the beach. We did some beach bouldering (basically rock climbing), played cricket and frisbee, etc. Saturday night we had a cook off! My group did an American theme, of course, and we just grilled some burgers and hot dogs on the "barbie" and made some s'mores. Apparently S'mores are just an American thing! No one else knew what they were so I tried to introduce everyone to the best campfire food ever. Australia doesn't have graham crackers though. At least the U.S. got something right, everyone wanted s'more (some more, s'more..see what I did there?). Anyway, while we were cooking a wombat got into Chris's suitcase (yeah he brought a suitcase camping because that's all he had...) and started eating our burger buns. I think it took us a while to realize but when we finally saw Alex politely asked the wombat to stop eating our buns and to go away. Of course that didn't work so Chris kicked it. And not in the butt :(
